At The Nation Media, our policies are designed to support responsible journalism, maintain editorial independence and provide our readers, contributors and partners with clear standards for how we operate.
This page sets out the principles and procedures that guide our publishing practices. It should be read alongside our other website documents, including our Privacy Policy, Terms and Conditions and Disclaimer.
1. Editorial Policy
The Nation Media is committed to publishing journalism that is responsible, relevant and in the public interest. Our editorial decisions are guided by:
- Accuracy and fairness;
- Verification of significant claims;
- Appropriate attribution of information;
- Clear distinction between fact, analysis, comment and opinion;
- Respect for individuals and communities;
- Editorial independence; and
- The public interest.
We aim to give readers sufficient context to understand significant events and issues rather than presenting information in a misleading or unnecessarily sensational manner.
Where information is developing or cannot yet be independently confirmed, we may make this clear within the published report.
2. Accuracy and Verification
Accuracy is a fundamental part of our editorial process.
Journalists and contributors are expected to take reasonable steps to verify information before publication, particularly where a report contains serious allegations, material claims or information that could significantly affect an individual or organisation.
Depending on the nature of a story, verification may include consulting relevant documents, official records, direct sources, subject-matter specialists or multiple independent sources.
Anonymous sources may be used where there is a legitimate editorial reason to protect the source’s identity. Such material should be handled with appropriate care and corroborated wherever reasonably possible.
3. Corrections and Clarifications Policy
We take errors seriously and seek to correct significant inaccuracies promptly. If an article contains a factual error, readers may notify us so that the matter can be reviewed.
Depending on the nature of the issue, we may:
- Correct the relevant wording;
- Add a clarification or editor’s note;
- Update information when circumstances have materially changed;
- Correct headlines, captions or other associated information; or
- Remove material in exceptional circumstances where publication cannot reasonably be justified.
Minor spelling, formatting or typographical changes may be made without a formal correction notice where they do not alter the meaning of the published material.
A correction does not necessarily mean that an entire article is withdrawn. Where the underlying report remains accurate but a particular detail requires amendment, the relevant section may simply be corrected.
4. Right of Reply
We recognise the importance of allowing people and organisations a reasonable opportunity to respond to significant allegations or disputed claims concerning them. Where appropriate, we may seek comment before publication.
If a relevant party provides a substantive response after publication, we may include the response in the article, add an update or publish a separate follow-up report, depending on the circumstances. A request for a right of reply does not automatically require us to publish every statement submitted to us.
5. Sources and Attribution
We aim to identify the origin of information whenever practical and editorially appropriate. Information obtained from public records, official statements, interviews, agencies, publications, research or other sources should be attributed appropriately.
We do not knowingly present another person’s original reporting, research or creative work as our own. Where source protection is necessary, we may withhold identifying information from publication while retaining appropriate internal editorial records.
6. Anonymous Sources
Anonymous sourcing can be important when information of genuine public interest cannot reasonably be obtained through an attributable source. We consider the reliability of the source, the significance of the information and the reason anonymity is required before relying on anonymous material.
Anonymous claims should not be used merely to make a story more dramatic or to avoid ordinary journalistic verification.
7. Opinion and Commentary
The Nation Media may publish opinion pieces, columns, analysis, commentary and contributions from individuals with relevant perspectives or expertise. Opinion content is not presented as straight news reporting.
Where appropriate, articles should make the distinction between factual reporting and the author’s interpretation or opinion clear to readers. The publication of an opinion does not mean that every view expressed within it represents the editorial position of The Nation Media.
8. User Comments and Contributions
Where commenting or other forms of user contribution are available, participants are expected to communicate respectfully and responsibly.
We do not seek to host material that is:
- Defamatory or knowingly false;
- Threatening or abusive;
- Discriminatory or hateful;
- Obscene or excessively offensive;
- Intended to harass or intimidate another person;
- Fraudulent or deliberately deceptive;
- Unlawfully obtained or distributed;
- Invasive of another person’s privacy; or
- Promotional spam or unrelated commercial material.
We may moderate, restrict or remove contributions that do not meet the standards of the relevant service.
9. Contributor Policy
Contributors are expected to provide original work or to have the necessary rights and permissions to submit material for publication. Contributors should not knowingly submit fabricated information, plagiarised material or content that materially misrepresents its source.
Where an article is commissioned or submitted by an external contributor, The Nation Media may edit it for clarity, length, grammar, structure, style or legal and editorial considerations.
Substantive editorial changes may be discussed with the contributor where appropriate.
10. Conflict of Interest
Editorial decisions should be made independently of personal, financial or commercial interests. Editors, journalists and contributors should disclose relevant conflicts of interest where these could reasonably affect the credibility or perceived independence of their work.
Where a conflict is significant, the individual concerned may be excluded from the relevant editorial decision or assignment.
Personal relationships, financial interests, gifts, hospitality or other benefits should not improperly influence editorial coverage.
11. Gifts, Hospitality and Benefits
Editorial staff and contributors should exercise caution when offered gifts, hospitality, travel, discounts or other benefits by individuals or organisations that may be covered by The Nation Media.
Benefits that could reasonably compromise, or appear to compromise, editorial independence should be declined. Where attendance at an event or acceptance of facilities is necessary for legitimate reporting, appropriate editorial judgement should be applied.
12. Sponsored and Commercial Content
Commercial relationships should be kept distinct from independent editorial decision-making. Where content is paid for, sponsored or otherwise produced as part of a commercial arrangement, it should be appropriately identified so that readers can distinguish it from independent editorial material.
Advertisers and commercial partners do not have the right to determine independent news coverage merely because they advertise with The Nation Media.
13. Advertising Standards
Advertising and promotional material should comply with applicable laws and recognised standards relevant to the markets in which it is displayed. We do not knowingly seek to promote advertising that is fraudulent, misleading, unlawful or otherwise unsuitable for publication.
Third-party advertising systems may automatically select advertisements based on their own technologies and criteria. Where applicable, further information about the handling of advertising-related data is addressed in our Privacy Policy.
14. AI-Generated and AI-Assisted Content
Artificial intelligence tools may be used in limited circumstances to assist with editorial, administrative or production tasks. AI-generated material must not be treated as inherently accurate.
Where AI tools are used in the preparation of editorial material, appropriate human oversight should be applied. Published information remains subject to the same standards of editorial review, verification and accountability as other material.
AI tools should not be used as a substitute for responsible journalistic judgement. We will not knowingly publish fabricated quotations, invented sources or fictional events as genuine journalism.
15. Images, Video and Other Media
Visual material should be presented in a manner that does not deliberately mislead readers about its context or origin. Where photographs, videos or other media have been supplied by third parties, appropriate attribution should be provided where required.
Material may be cropped, resized or technically adjusted for publication, provided that such changes do not materially distort its meaning. Images that could cause unnecessary distress may be subject to additional editorial consideration.
16. Privacy and Sensitive Information in Journalism
We recognise that journalism can involve information relating to individuals and sensitive circumstances. The collection and publication of personal information should have a legitimate editorial or public-interest basis and should be proportionate to the purpose of the report.
Particular care should be taken when reporting on children, victims of crime, vulnerable individuals and people involved in traumatic events. Our detailed approach to personal information and data handling is set out separately in our Privacy Policy.
17. Reporting on Children
Children and young people require particular consideration in news coverage. We seek to avoid unnecessary identification or exposure of children where publication could cause avoidable harm.
Where a child’s identity is relevant to a legitimate public-interest story, the editorial justification for publication should be carefully considered.
18. Crime and Allegations
Individuals should not be presented as guilty merely because they have been accused, arrested or charged. Where appropriate, reporting should distinguish between an allegation, an arrest, a charge, a court finding and a conviction.
We aim to use precise language when reporting legal proceedings and significant allegations.
19. Graphic or Disturbing Material
Material involving death, serious injury, violence, disasters or other distressing circumstances may occasionally be published where there is a clear editorial or public-interest justification.
We aim to avoid unnecessary graphic detail and consider whether publication adds meaningful value to the report. Where appropriate, readers may be given a warning about particularly disturbing material.
20. Hate Speech and Discriminatory Content
The Nation Media does not support hatred or discrimination based on protected or otherwise vulnerable characteristics. When reporting statements that contain discriminatory or hateful language, we consider whether reproducing the material is editorially necessary.
Where such statements are relevant to a news report, we may describe them rather than reproduce unnecessarily offensive wording.
21. Plagiarism
Original journalism and intellectual honesty are essential to our publishing standards. We do not knowingly publish another person’s work as original The Nation Media reporting.
Where information or material is obtained from another publication or source, appropriate attribution should be provided.
Suspected plagiarism may be investigated and, where confirmed, the relevant material may be corrected, amended or removed.
22. Copyright Complaints and Takedown Requests
We respect the intellectual property rights of creators, publishers and rights holders.
If you believe material published on The Nation Media infringes your copyright or other intellectual property rights, you may contact us with sufficient information to allow the matter to be assessed.
A complaint should identify:
- The work or material allegedly affected;
- The location of the material on our website;
- Your relationship to the rights in question;
- The nature of the alleged infringement; and
- Any relevant supporting information.
We will review legitimate complaints and may take appropriate action, which can include correction, attribution, modification or removal where warranted.
23. Editorial Independence
The Nation Media seeks to maintain a clear separation between editorial judgement and commercial interests. Editorial coverage should not be altered simply because a subject is an advertiser, commercial partner, public figure or other influential organisation.
Commercial relationships should not determine whether legitimate news is reported.
24. Complaints About Editorial Content
We welcome constructive feedback concerning our journalism. A complaint should, where possible, identify the specific article or material concerned and explain the factual, ethical or editorial issue being raised.
Complaints may be reviewed by an appropriate member of the editorial team.
Where an error or legitimate editorial concern is identified, we may take corrective action consistent with our Corrections Policy.
25. Requests for Article Removal
Publication does not normally result in automatic removal simply because an individual or organisation later objects to an article. Requests for removal are considered on their individual circumstances, taking into account factors such as accuracy, public interest, legal considerations, privacy, the age of the material and the potential consequences of continued publication.
Where appropriate, we may correct, update, annotate or amend material instead of removing it entirely.
26. Policy Review
Our policies may be reviewed and updated as our editorial practices, technology, legal obligations and publishing environment develop. The version published on this page represents the policies currently adopted by The Nation Media.
