1. Our Mission

The Nation Media is an independent digital media platform intended to provide a space for information, public discussion, journalism, opinions, perspectives, commentary, and other forms of lawful user-generated content.

The Nation Media may publish content submitted by members of the public, contributors, writers, journalists, organisations, creators, and other third parties.

Our platform is designed to encourage the lawful exchange of information and ideas and to provide the public with an opportunity to share matters of interest and public importance.

The Nation Media is committed to operating its platform responsibly and in accordance with applicable law.

2. User-Generated Content

A significant portion of the content published on The Nation Media may be submitted, uploaded, posted, or otherwise provided by members of the public and other third parties.

Such content may include, without limitation:

news reports;
personal accounts;
opinions;
commentary;
analysis;
articles;
photographs;
videos;
audio;
documents;
links;
reviews;
public-interest information;
political commentary;
social commentary;
cultural content;
local information; and
other lawful material.

User-generated content is the responsibility of the person or entity that submitted or published it.

The fact that material appears on The Nation Media does not, by itself, mean that The Nation Media created, verified, investigated, approved, endorsed, adopted, or agrees with that material.

Unless expressly stated otherwise, statements and opinions contained in user-generated content belong solely to their respective authors.

3. No Automatic Editorial Endorsement

Publication of third-party content does not constitute an endorsement, sponsorship, recommendation, confirmation, or adoption of the views, statements, allegations, opinions, claims, or conclusions expressed within that content.

The Nation Media may provide a platform for competing or opposing views without endorsing either position.

The publication of an allegation does not mean that the allegation has been established as fact.

Where appropriate, readers should independently assess the source, context, evidence, and reliability of user-submitted material.

4. Responsibility of Contributors and Users

Every person who submits, uploads, publishes, or otherwise provides content to The Nation Media is responsible for ensuring that their material is lawful and does not knowingly infringe the rights of others.

Users must not submit material that:

is knowingly false or deliberately misleading;
unlawfully defames another person or organisation;
infringes copyright or other intellectual-property rights;
unlawfully discloses private or confidential information;
contains unlawful threats or harassment;
promotes or facilitates unlawful activity;
impersonates another person or organisation;
unlawfully uses another person’s identity or personal information;
contains material prohibited by applicable law;
infringes a court order or other binding legal restriction; or
otherwise creates unlawful harm or liability.

Users remain responsible for obtaining any permissions, licences, consents, releases, or other rights required for material they submit.

5. Third-Party Content Disclaimer

The Nation Media is a platform and publisher of content originating from multiple sources, including members of the public and independent contributors.

Because material may be submitted by third parties, The Nation Media cannot guarantee that every user-submitted statement, claim, opinion, photograph, video, document, statistic, quotation, or other item is accurate, complete, current, authentic, or independently verified.

Accordingly, The Nation Media does not warrant or represent that all third-party content is accurate, complete, reliable, or suitable for any particular purpose.

Readers should exercise appropriate judgement when relying upon information submitted by third parties.

6. Editorial Independence

The Nation Media maintains editorial independence from political, governmental, commercial, religious, institutional, and other external pressures.

Where The Nation Media itself produces editorial material, editorial decisions are made according to journalistic judgement, available evidence, public-interest considerations, and applicable law.

No government authority, political organisation, advertiser, sponsor, commercial partner, public official, or private individual is entitled to determine our editorial conclusions merely because they disagree with our reporting.

The existence of third-party user-generated content on the platform does not mean that The Nation Media has adopted the political, commercial, religious, or ideological position of its author.

7. Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Press

The Nation Media recognises freedom of expression and freedom of the press as fundamental principles of a democratic society.

Article 19 of the Constitution recognises freedom of speech and expression and freedom of the press, subject to restrictions imposed by law. Article 19A recognises a right to access information in matters of public importance, subject to lawful regulation and reasonable restrictions.

Internationally, Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) protects the freedom to hold opinions and the freedom to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media.

The Nation Media supports the lawful exercise of freedom of expression while recognising that such freedom carries corresponding legal and ethical responsibilities.

Nothing in this Charter is intended to provide immunity from applicable law.

8. Public Submissions and Opinions

The Nation Media may allow members of the public to express opinions and publish information concerning matters they consider relevant or important.

The platform may therefore contain views that are:

supportive;
critical;
controversial;
unpopular;
politically sensitive;
disputed;
satirical;
speculative; or
contrary to the views of other users or The Nation Media.

The publication of such material does not mean that The Nation Media agrees with it.

The Nation Media reserves the right to moderate, edit, restrict, refuse, suspend, or remove content where reasonably considered necessary, including where content may breach applicable law or these terms.

9. Accuracy and Verification

The Nation Media seeks to promote accurate and responsible information.

However, because the platform may contain material submitted directly by members of the public, not every item can necessarily be independently investigated or verified before publication.

Where The Nation Media identifies a material factual error in content under its editorial control, it may correct, update, annotate, or remove that material.

For third-party content, The Nation Media may investigate complaints where appropriate but does not guarantee that every submission will be independently fact-checked before publication.

Users should not represent their personal submissions as officially verified by The Nation Media unless The Nation Media has expressly stated that the material has been verified.

10. Allegations and Accusations

11. Right of Reply

Individuals and organisations who believe that they have been materially misrepresented by published content may contact The Nation Media and request a correction, clarification, or right of reply.

Requests should identify:

the relevant article or post;
the specific statement disputed;
the factual basis for the complaint; and
any evidence supporting the requested correction.

The Nation Media may independently assess such requests.

A request for a correction or right of reply does not automatically require publication, removal, or alteration of material.

12. Complaints and Takedown Requests

The Nation Media provides a mechanism through which individuals, organisations, rights holders, and other concerned parties may notify us about potentially unlawful, infringing, defamatory, misleading, or otherwise problematic content.

Upon receiving a credible complaint, The Nation Media may review the relevant material and may, where appropriate:

request information from the contributor;
add a clarification;
correct the material;
restrict access;
remove the material;
suspend the relevant account;
preserve relevant records where legally appropriate; or
take other reasonable action.

The Nation Media does not guarantee that every complaint will result in removal.

A complaint must not be used as a mechanism to suppress lawful criticism, legitimate journalism, political disagreement, or protected expression.

13. Copyright and Intellectual Property

Users must not submit material that unlawfully infringes another person’s copyright, trademark, design rights, database rights, image rights, or other intellectual-property rights.

By submitting content, the contributor represents that they have the necessary rights or permissions to submit and publish that material, or that their use is otherwise permitted by applicable law.

The person submitting the material remains responsible for any intellectual-property claim arising from their submission.

Unless otherwise indicated, original editorial material created by The Nation Media remains the intellectual property of The Nation Media or its respective rights holders.

Third-party content remains the property of its respective owners.

14. Licence to Publish User Content

By submitting, uploading, or publishing content to The Nation Media, the contributor grants The Nation Media, to the extent permitted by law, a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, display, publish, distribute, transmit, format, edit, adapt, promote, and otherwise use the submitted material in connection with operating, maintaining, developing, promoting, and providing The Nation Media’s services.

This licence is intended to allow The Nation Media to technically and editorially operate its platform.

The contributor retains ownership of their original intellectual property, subject to the rights granted under this Charter and any additional terms applicable to a particular submission.

15. Contributor Representations

By submitting content, the contributor represents that:

they have the necessary rights, authority, or lawful basis to submit the material;
the submission does not knowingly violate applicable law;
the submission does not knowingly infringe the rights of another person;
where required, they have obtained appropriate permission to use third-party material;
they have not knowingly impersonated another person or organisation; and
they accept responsibility for their submission.

16. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by applicable law, a person who submits or publishes content through The Nation Media is responsible for claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, and expenses arising from their unlawful conduct or from material that they knowingly submit in violation of applicable law or the rights of another person.

Nothing in this section is intended to exclude liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or transferred.

17. Privacy and Personal Information

Users should not submit another person’s private or sensitive personal information without a lawful basis or legitimate justification.

The Nation Media may remove or restrict material containing unnecessary personal information where it considers such action appropriate or necessary.

Where personal information is relevant to a legitimate public-interest matter, publication may be considered subject to applicable law and editorial judgement.

18. Journalistic Sources

Where The Nation Media itself conducts journalism, it respects the principle of protecting legitimate confidential journalistic sources, subject to applicable law.

Material submitted by members of the public does not automatically constitute a confidential journalistic source relationship with The Nation Media.

Users should not assume that submitting information anonymously or under a pseudonym creates an absolute guarantee of anonymity where disclosure is legally required.

19. Government and Legal Requests

The Nation Media may comply with valid and binding legal requirements, including lawful court orders, warrants, regulatory requirements, and other legally enforceable requests.

Where legally permissible and appropriate, The Nation Media may challenge requests that it considers unlawful, overbroad, or inconsistent with applicable rights and protections.

Nothing in this Charter prevents The Nation Media from complying with a legal obligation.

20. No Government Ownership or Political Control

Unless expressly stated elsewhere on this website, The Nation Media is not presented as a government publication, government department, political party publication, or official government communication channel.

The presence of political content, government-related information, or political opinions on the platform does not establish government ownership, political control, or political endorsement.

21. Advertising and Commercial Content

Advertising, sponsorship, commercial partnerships, or other commercial relationships should not determine the editorial conclusions of The Nation Media.

Advertisers and commercial partners do not purchase editorial approval.

Where content is sponsored, paid, promotional, or otherwise commercially influenced, The Nation Media may identify it appropriately so that readers can distinguish commercial communication from independent editorial content.

22. External Links and Third-Party Websites

The Nation Media may contain links to websites, platforms, services, or resources operated by third parties.

The Nation Media does not necessarily control or endorse the content, policies, security, availability, accuracy, or practices of external websites.

Users access third-party websites at their own discretion and risk.

23. Availability of the Platform

The Nation Media does not guarantee that the website, individual pages, user accounts, submission systems, or other services will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, or free from technical errors.

We may modify, suspend, restrict, or discontinue any part of the platform at any time where reasonably necessary.

24. Content Moderation

The Nation Media reserves the right to moderate content in accordance with applicable law and our operational requirements.

Moderation may include:

pre-publication review;
post-publication review;
editing;
labelling;
restricting visibility;
removing content;
suspending accounts;
terminating access; or
taking other reasonable measures.

Moderation does not mean that The Nation Media assumes responsibility for every item submitted by a user.

25. No Guarantee of User Identity

Unless expressly verified by The Nation Media, users should not assume that a person posting under a name, username, photograph, organisation name, or other identifier is genuinely the person or organisation they claim to be.

The Nation Media does not guarantee the identity, qualifications, professional status, affiliation, or authority of contributors or users.

26. Legal Compliance

The Nation Media seeks to comply with applicable laws and lawful regulatory requirements governing its activities.

Users are responsible for complying with the laws applicable to their own conduct and submissions.

Nothing in this Charter authorises any person to use The Nation Media for an unlawful purpose.

27. International Human Rights Standards

The Nation Media supports internationally recognised principles concerning:

freedom of expression;
freedom of the press;
access to information;
pluralism and diversity of media;
protection of journalists and media workers;
protection against intimidation and unlawful interference;
the public’s right to receive information; and
independence of editorial decision-making.

Our principles are informed, where applicable, by internationally recognised standards including Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

These principles do not automatically override domestic law and do not create immunity from applicable legal requirements.

28. Defamation and Reputation

The Nation Media recognises the importance of protecting individual and institutional reputation.

Users remain responsible for statements they publish concerning other persons or organisations.

The publication of user-generated material does not mean that The Nation Media independently confirms the truth of statements contained within it.

Where a legitimate complaint concerning potentially defamatory material is received, The Nation Media may review the material and take appropriate action.

Nothing in this Charter is intended to waive any person’s legal rights or remedies.

29. Editorial and Political Neutrality

The Nation Media does not automatically endorse any political party, candidate, government, opposition group, corporation, or political ideology merely because it publishes or hosts content concerning that entity.

Coverage of a political organisation does not constitute political support.

Criticism of a government does not constitute support for its opponents.

Likewise, criticism of an opposition group does not constitute support for the government.

The platform may contain multiple and competing perspectives.

30. No Guarantee of Accuracy of User Submissions

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, The Nation Media makes no representation or warranty that user-generated content is:

accurate;
complete;
authentic;
current;
reliable;
independently verified;
free from error; or
suitable for a particular purpose.

Users who rely upon third-party material do so at their own discretion.

31. Limitation of Responsibility for Third-Party Content

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, The Nation Media is not responsible for the independent acts, statements, omissions, representations, opinions, claims, or submissions of users and other third parties.

The Nation Media does not assume responsibility merely by providing the technical or editorial means through which third-party content becomes available.

Nothing in this section excludes or limits any liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.

32. Changes to this Charter

The Nation Media may update this Charter from time to time to reflect changes in its services, editorial practices, technology, or applicable legal requirements.

The latest version published on TheNationMedia.com will constitute the current version of this Charter unless otherwise stated.

33. Legal Notice

This page describes the editorial principles, platform rules, legal framework, and institutional commitments of The Nation Media.

It is not a substitute for legal advice, does not constitute a government-issued media licence, and does not confer immunity from any applicable law, court order, regulatory requirement, or lawful investigation.

The Nation Media reserves all rights available to it under applicable law.

34. Commitment to the Public

The Nation Media exists to provide a platform for information, discussion, journalism, opinions, and public-interest communication.

We believe citizens have a legitimate interest in accessing information and participating in public discourse.

We believe people should be able to express lawful opinions.

We believe journalists and members of the public should be able to raise legitimate questions about matters affecting society.

We also recognise that freedom of expression carries responsibilities.

Accordingly, The Nation Media seeks to provide a platform that respects lawful expression whilst taking reasonable measures against unlawful content and misuse of the service.
