Accessibility

The Nation Media is committed to making our website and digital content accessible and usable by as many people as reasonably possible, including people who use assistive technologies or have disabilities affecting vision, hearing, mobility, speech or cognition.

We aim to improve accessibility across our website and to incorporate recognised accessibility practices into the way we publish and maintain digital content.

1. Our Accessibility Approach

We aim to make The Nation Media website easier to navigate, understand and use by following recognised web accessibility principles.

Where reasonably practicable, we work towards the four core accessibility principles:

  • Perceivable — information should be available in ways that users can perceive, including through text alternatives and appropriate media presentation.
  • Operable — website functions should be usable with different input methods, including keyboard navigation.
  • Understandable — content and navigation should be presented in a clear and predictable manner.
  • Robust — website content should work with commonly used browsers, devices and assistive technologies.

Our accessibility work is an ongoing process rather than a one-time exercise.

2. Accessible Content

When preparing and publishing articles and other digital content, we aim to:

  • Use clear headings and logical content structures;
  • Write descriptive link text where practical;
  • Provide meaningful alternative text for informative images;
  • Avoid using images of text where ordinary text can be used;
  • Use captions or transcripts for relevant video and audio content where reasonably practicable;
  • Provide sufficient context for multimedia content;
  • Avoid unnecessary flashing or rapidly changing visual effects; and
  • Use language and formatting that make content easier to understand.

3. Images and Alternative Text

Images that communicate information should, where appropriate, include alternative text describing their relevant purpose or meaning.

Decorative images may not require descriptive alternative text.

For news photography, alternative text should be concise and informative rather than simply repeating an article headline or image filename.

Where an image contains important information that cannot reasonably be conveyed through short alternative text, the surrounding article or accompanying text should provide the necessary context where appropriate.

4. Video and Audio

Where practical, multimedia published by The Nation Media should be made more accessible through features such as:

  • Captions for video;
  • Transcripts for significant audio content;
  • Descriptive titles and accompanying context; and
  • Controls that allow users to pause, stop or adjust media where applicable.

The availability of these features may vary depending on the source, format and platform used to publish third-party or embedded media.

5. Keyboard Navigation

We aim to ensure that important website functions can be operated without requiring a mouse or touchscreen alone.

Users should be able to move through interactive elements using standard keyboard controls where the relevant functionality supports keyboard operation.

We also aim to maintain a visible and understandable focus indicator so that keyboard users can identify the element currently selected.

6. Text, Colour and Readability

We aim to present text in a manner that supports readability across different devices and viewing conditions.

This includes consideration of:

  • Legible typography;
  • Appropriate text sizing;
  • Sufficient contrast between text and its background;
  • Clear visual hierarchy;
  • Adequate spacing; and
  • Responsive presentation on different screen sizes.

Users may also be able to use browser, operating-system or device settings to increase text size, zoom the page or apply other accessibility preferences.

7. Screen Readers and Assistive Technologies

We aim to structure website content so that it can be interpreted effectively by commonly used assistive technologies, including screen readers.

This includes using meaningful headings, labels, landmarks and other semantic structures where appropriate.

Because assistive technologies and browsers differ, the experience may vary between devices and software.

8. Mobile Accessibility

The Nation Media recognises that a significant proportion of readers may access our content using smartphones and tablets.

We therefore aim to ensure that important content and functionality remain usable on smaller screens and across commonly used mobile devices.

Users should be able to zoom and navigate content without unnecessary restrictions where the underlying platform permits.

9. Third-Party Content

Some material displayed on The Nation Media may originate from or be hosted by third-party services, including video platforms, social-media services, advertising providers, embedded content providers and other external technologies.

We cannot always control the accessibility features of third-party services.

Where practical, we will consider accessibility when selecting or implementing third-party tools and services.

10. Accessibility Limitations

Although we aim to improve accessibility, some parts of the website may not yet provide an ideal experience for every user.

Older articles, archived material, third-party content and legacy website components may contain accessibility limitations.

We may also encounter technical limitations when publishing breaking news, externally supplied material or content produced through third-party platforms.

Where an accessibility issue is identified, we will consider reasonable improvements based on the nature and importance of the issue.

11. Accessibility Assistance

If you experience difficulty accessing an article, feature or other part of The Nation Media website, please contact us and explain the problem.

Where possible, please include:

  • The page or article you were attempting to access;
  • The accessibility barrier you encountered;
  • The device and browser you were using;
  • The assistive technology involved, if applicable; and
  • Any alternative format or assistance that would help you access the information.

Please do not send passwords, payment information or other unnecessary sensitive information when reporting an accessibility issue.

12. Accessibility Feedback

Accessibility feedback helps us identify problems that may not be apparent during ordinary website testing.

We welcome reports concerning issues such as:

  • Keyboard navigation;
  • Screen-reader compatibility;
  • Missing or inadequate alternative text;
  • Video captions or transcripts;
  • Colour contrast;
  • Text readability;
  • Form labels or controls;
  • Page structure and headings;
  • Focus indicators;
  • Mobile accessibility; and
  • Difficulties using interactive features.

We will review accessibility feedback and determine appropriate action based on the nature of the issue and available technical solutions.

13. Accessibility Improvements

Accessibility is an ongoing part of website development and content management.

As the website is updated, we may introduce improvements to its design, code, content structure, media presentation and interactive features.

Our goal is to progressively reduce accessibility barriers and provide a better experience for all readers.

14. How Readers Can Improve Accessibility

Many accessibility features are also available through the user’s device, browser or operating system.

Depending on the device and software being used, readers may be able to:

  1. Increase text size using browser or device accessibility settings.
  2. Zoom the webpage using the browser’s built-in zoom function.
  3. Use a screen reader to have page content read aloud.
  4. Navigate using a keyboard instead of a mouse or touchscreen.
  5. Enable captions when captions are available on video content.
  6. Adjust contrast or colour settings through the operating system or browser.
  7. Use text-to-speech tools where additional reading assistance is required.
  8. Disable or reduce motion through operating-system accessibility preferences where supported.

The exact steps differ between Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Chrome, Safari, Edge and other platforms.

15. Our Accessibility Goal

The Nation Media aims to make its digital journalism available to the widest practical audience.

We will continue to consider accessibility when developing website features, publishing digital content and improving the reader experience.

This Accessibility section may be updated as our accessibility practices and website technology develop.
