Michael J. Fox Awarded Canada’s Highest Honor for Milestone Parkinson’s Advocacy
The Beloved Actor and Activist Receives a Prestigious Promotion to Companion of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall
Michael J. Fox has received one of Canada’s highest civilian accolades, stepping up to the nation’s premier tier of recognition for a lifetime of cultural impact and tireless medical advocacy.
The Back to the Future icon was officially promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada during an investiture ceremony hosted by Governor General Louise Arbour at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. While Fox was previously appointed an Officer of the Order in 2010, this higher designation honors his powerful global advocacy, unflinching honesty regarding his Parkinson’s diagnosis, and the monumental work achieved through the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Accepting the honor alongside 51 other inductees and promotees, Fox expressed deep pride and humility, reflecting on how his home country has continuously served as a crucial proving ground for neurological research and advancements.
Governor General Arbour lightened the formal atmosphere during the ceremony with a nod to his legendary cinematic legacy, noting during her remarks, “After all, ‘Back to the Future’ has always been a much better idea than ‘Forward to the Past.'”
Having raised billions for research while continuing to shift global perceptions around living with chronic illness, Fox’s latest distinction cements his enduring legacy far beyond the silver screen.
