Winter Travel Chaos: Ryanair and easyJet Ax Thousands of Flights and Millions of Seats Amid Soaring Fuel Costs
Budget aviation giants are drastically scaling back their winter schedules, grounding planes and dropping routes as skyrocketing fuel prices squeeze profit margins.
European travelers are facing massive disruptions heading into the colder months as both Ryanair and easyJet confirm sweeping cuts to their winter flight programs.
Driven by a staggering spike in aviation fuel prices—which have nearly doubled to roughly $196 per barrel compared to earlier periods—low-cost carriers have deemed thousands of off-peak routes economically unviable. Rather than operating flights at a deep loss during periods of softer winter demand, both airlines have opted to pull capacity entirely.
Key Details of the Winter Cuts:
easyJet’s Expansion of Reductions: EasyJet has doubled down on capacity trimming, ramping up its total winter seat cancellations to 1.4 million seats between October 2026 and March 2027. The cuts heavily target high-frequency routes where multiple daily flights can be consolidated, including a 10-percent reduction in operations to and from Germany, alongside scaled-back leisure routes to places like Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. EasyJet also confirmed it will completely pull out of operations at Leeds Bradford Airport by January 4, 2027.
Ryanair’s Midweek and Off-Peak Groundings: Ryanair is focusing its cuts on low-demand windows, trimming mid-week services (specifically Tuesdays and Wednesdays), Saturday afternoons, and Sunday mornings—particularly through late November, early December, and mid-January. High-tax and high-cost jurisdictions across Germany, Spain, and parts of regional Europe are bearing the brunt of the carrier’s capacity retrenchment.
Industry analysts warn that passengers holding winter tickets should check their flight statuses immediately. Under UK and EU passenger rights regulations, travelers facing cancellations are entitled to a full refund or a free alternative replacement flight.
