Age of Empires II is one of those strategy games that can swallow up an entire afternoon before you even realise what time it is.
Originally released in 1999, this classic RTS lets you build an empire from a tiny settlement into a powerful civilisation. You gather resources, develop new technologies, build armies and, eventually, go and smash your neighbours to bits.
The best thing about Age of Empires II is the variety. With different civilisations offering their own strengths, units and technologies, every match can play out differently. You might focus on a powerful economy, rush your opponent early or patiently build up an enormous army before launching an attack.
The campaigns are another highlight, mixing historical events with enjoyable RTS gameplay. They give you plenty of structured missions while introducing different strategies and civilisations along the way.
Multiplayer is where things can get seriously addictive, though. A seemingly harmless match can quickly turn into complete chaos once everyone starts building armies and fighting for territory.
The graphics and interface obviously show their age, but the gameplay remains incredibly satisfying. There’s a lovely balance between managing your economy and planning your military strategy, and there’s always something to keep you busy.
