Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a brilliant example of how to turn a beloved film universe into a proper RPG adventure.
Released in 2003, KOTOR takes you to a time thousands of years before the films, putting you in the middle of a massive conflict between the Jedi and Sith. You create your own character and gradually decide what sort of hero — or villain — you want to become.
The story is easily the biggest reason to play KOTOR. There are plenty of memorable characters, interesting planets and genuinely surprising moments along the way. It feels like you’re playing through your own Star Wars film, except you’re the one making many of the decisions.
The choice system is another major highlight. Your conversations and actions can influence relationships, quests and your character’s alignment with the Light or Dark Side. Want to be a noble Jedi? Go for it. Fancy embracing the Dark Side and becoming an absolute menace? That’s an option too.
Combat uses a tactical real-time system where you can pause and issue commands, allowing you to plan your attacks rather than simply hammering buttons. It’s a little dated now, but it works well alongside the RPG mechanics.
Exploring the galaxy is also great fun. From familiar Star Wars elements to completely new locations, there’s plenty to discover, and your party members add loads of personality to the journey.
The graphics and combat haven’t aged perfectly, but the story, characters and atmosphere still carry the experience brilliantly.
